Fibre Hygiene – Skill 9 focuses on the correct handling, inspection and cleaning of optical fibre connectors and patching equipment. The training helps learners develop practical habits that protect fibre components from contamination, damage and incorrect handling during installation and network maintenance activities.
Learners work with practices relevant to fibre patching in switching, transmission, and fixed and mobile radio networks. Training includes inspecting connectors with suitable inspection equipment, applying approved cleaning methods, managing fibre patch leads and cables, and completing patching activities in accordance with the required work instructions. Attention is also given to WHS requirements and anti-static precautions when working with sensitive fibre hardware.
The course is relevant to telecommunications line workers, technicians and jointers involved in fibre installation, patching, replacement or maintenance activities. It also includes skills relevant to fibre-to-the-curb (FTTC) work, including cable and connector identification and activities associated with digital premises equipment (DPU) replacement.
