Fibre Splicing – Skill 13 provides practical training in preparing, splicing, terminating and testing optical fibre cable for telecommunications projects. Learners develop the skills needed to work with fibre connections during new installations and network upgrades, including work on optical backbone and access network infrastructure.
The training covers careful fibre handling, connector inspection and cleaning, patching, fibre splicing and termination. Learners also work with fusion-spliced pigtails and industry-recognised enclosures, while following manufacturer instructions and relevant work practices. Safe procedures for working around laser-based fibre systems, including required precautions for live fibre, are also addressed.
The course is relevant to telecommunications line workers, technicians and jointers involved in commercial or industrial fibre-to-the-premises installations and other telecommunications projects. Learners also develop skills in recording installation information and reporting test results in accordance with relevant requirements.
